Tune into Happin.App on January 14, 7.30pm to see Polaris Prize winner, Lido Pimienta perform live from the legendary Phoenix Concert Theatre as part of City Hall Live Spotlight.
Lido Pimienta is a Toronto-based, Colombian-born musician, interdisciplinary artist, and curator. She has performed, exhibited, and curated around the world since 2002, exploring the politics of gender, race, motherhood, identity and the construct of the Canadian landscape in the Latin American diaspora and vernacular.
Her new album Miss Colombia takes her ecstatic hybridity to a new level, building on the “nu” intersection of electronica and cumbia established by her first two albums, Color, released in 2010, and the 2016 Polaris Prize-winning La Papessa, as Canadian album of the year. Produced with Matt Smith, a/k/a Prince Nifty, Miss Colombia overflows with understated genius and continues to chart Pimienta’s evolution into an independent woman and artist who refuses to fit into pre-conceived notions of what a pop Latina artist ought to be.
City Hall Live Spotlight
In partnership with Unison Benevolent Fund, City Hall Live Spotlight is a weekly livestreamed concert series featuring professionally produced livestreamed videos of Toronto musicians performing at shuttered music venues around the city, along with a handful of other music-related businesses (recording studios, rehearsal spaces, etc,). The goal is to help "spotlight" not just local artists but venues and other parts of the live music ecosystem that have been catastrophically affected by the pandemic while raising much-needed money for the Unison Benevolent Fund. The series will run from January-May 2021.
Spotlight builds on this spring's City Hall Live Online series, which provided paid performance opportunities for 120 local artists via online streaming (mostly from the artists' own homes) between April – July.
City Hall Live Spotlight is a part of the City's ShowLoveTO initiative, launched in association with Founding Sponsor American Express and in partnership with Destination Toronto, to help Toronto businesses, neighbourhoods and residents safely recover and rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic.
All donations and proceeds raised from sales of the Spotlight merchandise will be donated to
